GEMS 3-Prong Approach
The challenges facing these students are systemic. The answer is to support the whole child by working together with schools, families, and the community.
School
Students attend weekly classes where instructors guide them in managing emotions, making healthy choices, and planning for the future. Through exercises and discussions, they build essential social and emotional skills. |
Family
A child's success thrives on parental involvement—but that’s tough when one parent is incarcerated. We partner with caregivers to provide the support they need, ensuring every student has a strong foundation to succeed. |
Role Models
Students thrive with the right influences. Our mentors help the students discover their unique gifts, because we know it takes a community to help a child grow into a healthy adult. |
MIDDLE SCHOOL CAN BE ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING PERIODS IN A KID'S LIFE. ADD IN HAVING A PARENT IN PRISON, AND LIFE CAN BE OVERWHELMING.
In the Houston Metro Area alone, more than 43,000 middle school-age children have experienced the incarceration of a parent. This challenge often goes unspoken, yet its impact runs deep. Even if they don’t openly share their experiences, the emotions and struggles remain. GEMS empowers middle school students to see that their future is not limited by their past.
